Macao Citizens, let’s take action together and save the giant panda
As the conservation ambassadors, giant pandas have come to Macao and started their mission to enhance the education of animal conservation in Macao. To protect giant pandas and other animals, both you and I can make contribution to it! It is because reducing pollution, saving energy, protecting natural environment and ecology are equal to protecting mountains, forests, rivers, oceans, our planet and all of the animals. Our involvement is crucial to the green living. The global campaign “Earth Hour” is in our daily life. Green living starts from here:
Use energy-saving light bulbs
Lighting accounts for 22% of the consumption of electricity in households. An energy-saving light bulb consumes only 1/3 of the electricity of an incandescent light bulb. Every light bulb you replace reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 50 kg. Of course, using natural light as much as possible is the best option.
Purchase electrical appliances with energy labels
Purchasing energy-efficient appliances is a simple and direct way of reducing emissions. For reference, see the energy efficiency labeling scheme in Hong Kong, and the most up-to-date ‘Low carbon living – appliances guide’ published by the World Wide Fund For Nature.
Avoid using air conditioning
According to the statistics of Hong Kong, air conditioning accounts for 30% of the overall electricity consumption. When summer comes, consumption skyrockets. A suitable air conditioner temperature can cut electricity bills. By turning up the air conditioner temperature by 1 degree, you can save 3 to 10% of electricity consumption. We suggest you install a thermostat for the air conditioner, and replace air conditioner filters regularly.
No standing-by – let’s switch it off
Electricity is consumed even when a television, air conditioner or computer is in standby mode. All electrical appliances in standby mode can account for 6% of electricity consumption. Remember to switch off idle electrical appliances. By doing so, a common household can reduce the emission of carbon dioxide by 100 kg annually.
Nurture good living habits, conserve energy
Place the refrigerator in a cool place and reduce the frequency of opening and closing the refrigerator door, to avoid the consumption of more energy. When ironing clothes, you can first iron clothes that require a high temperature, followed by those that require a moderate temperature. Finally switch off the iron and use the remaining heat to iron clothes made of silk material, which requires a lower temperature. Finish ironing the clothes all at once if possible, to avoid reheating the iron. When cooking, remember to cover the pan with the lid, to avoid loss of heat energy.
Use unleaded petrol for your favorite car. If possible, walk or take public transportation to reach your destination.
Green Cleaning Method
Only start a cycle on your washing machine, clothes dryer or dishwasher when they are full. This can reduce the annual emission of carbon dioxide by 100 kg on average. When washing clothes, lower the water temperature as much as possible, as cold water is fine besides, it is best to use biodegradable detergents.
Lower the water temperature, take a shower instead
Taking a bath accounts for 2/3 of hot water consumption. If cold water is needed to lower the temperature of bath water, why not directly lower the water temperature of the water heater? Lowering the temperature of the water heater from 60°C to 49°C, can reduce emissions of carbon dioxide by 200 kg annually.
Taking a shower instead of a bath will save 1/3 of water. Also, don’t forget to turn off the tap when brushing your teeth.
Reduce and Recycle Rubbish
Minimize the waste you produce. Think twice before buying things. Do you really need a new sofa set or a new set of clothes? Donate unwanted items to people who need them by delivering them to charitable organizations.
Purchase high-quality, durable and biodegradable products. For instance, when holding a party, reduce the use of disposable paper plates, plastic forks or plastic bags. Instead, use reusable containers. Also, do not prepare too much food.
Make good use of the recycling facilities near your residence. Glass, aluminium cans, iron and some plastic products are recyclable.
