The Lesser Panda or Red Panda was discovered in 1825, initially named Panda, which name means "the bamboo eater" in Nepalese. After a late discover of a giant panda, it was concluded the existence of two different types of pandas. In 1825, the panda was known as the Lesser Panda or Red Panda, later in 1869, Panda was finally known as the Giant Panda.
